Felt Cupcake

Here's another handmade toy my 20 month old loves! A cupcake made out of felt. I free handed the outline for the cupcake and used that outline as a template for the size of the wrapper, icing and cherry on top.  The sprinkles are made from felt scraps from other projects.

My 20 month old loves to take these apart and stack them back together. We talk about the different colors and number of pieces in each set and how the felt feels. But her favorite part is a big handful of "sprinkles" to drop on the icing.

None of these pieces are sewn, just cut, so older children could help with these. Each piece of 8 1/2 x 11 felt cost me 29¢ and four pieces of felt should yield three full cupcakes with a little left over. Not bad, $1.16 for three cupcakes! Or more if you choose to make them smaller. K.

Toddler Pretend Kitchen Picture

Here's the finished project!... For now at least :-) I'd still like to paint the inside and add a cute cafe name on the outside but I wanted to test my 20 month olds level of interest first. And it went great! She loves this new toy! She likes to play in her kitchen when my husband and I are busy making dinner or doing dishes.

She also has a pot, pan and whisk (not pictured) and loves to "stir it up!"

This toy is great because it can be made from things you have on hand. Even if you purchase new items, you can buy them from a dollar store and spend around five dollars or less! K.

Tutu Tuesday: 01-24-2012

This week for Tutu Tuesday my daughter made painted hand print tutus.

We used acrylic paints and computer paper, or you could use card stock. I traced the outline of a leotard and painted it in for her. Older kids could do this on their own. You can also cut out a leotard from colored card stock if you choose.

Then came the fun part! I put acrylic paints on paper plates so she can easily flatten out her hand in the paint. Next she makes hand prints where the tutu would go. It's easiest to have the picture upside down for this part so the painter doesn't have to turn their small wrist around backwards.

Let me know how your tutus turn out! I'd love to hear from you! Happy Tutu Tuesday! K.

Tip Of The Day: 1-15-2012

When kids are just learning to use crayons in late infancy or early toddlerhood try giving them a blank piece of paper or coloring page that is taped down. We taped ours to the kitchen floor for the day because the crayons cleaned up easily from the floor, but you can could use any surface you don't mind putting tape onto. (I don't suggest the wall tho!) This technique helps your child to master the art of only coloring, leave the paper folding and tearing for baby's first Christmas. K.

Tip Of The Day: 12-08-2011

Cut your dryer sheets in half. They'll work just the same and last twice as long. Use a coupon, pair it with a sale, cut them in half and you've got major savings! K.
